Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has condemned the Federal High Court judgement ordering the deregistration of the ADC and other political parties, describing the decision as “judicial rascality” and a threat to Nigeria’s democratic future.

In a statement issued through his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku argued that the ruling appears aimed at weakening opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections. He pointed to an existing Court of Appeal order that reportedly directed a stay of proceedings on the matter pending the determination of an appeal scheduled for October 2026, questioning how the lower court proceeded to deliver judgment despite that directive.

Atiku warned that attempts to narrow Nigeria’s political space could fuel concerns about the emergence of a de facto one-party system, stressing that the country’s democracy was built through years of struggle and sacrifice. His remarks add to growing opposition criticism of the controversial ruling, which is expected to face further legal challenges.
