The best interest of the child is the guiding principle in family matters.

I can authoritatively tell you that under Nigerian law, custody decisions in separation or divorce cases are not determined by who has more money or stronger connections.
The court focuses solely on what best serves the welfare of the child. This includes the child's emotional needs, education, health, and overall well-being.
Here are some important points to note:

🖊In child custody matters, the court gives priority to the emotional, educational, and health needs of the child.
🖊For marriage dissolution, a divorce is only granted when the court is satisfied that the marriage has broken down irretrievably.
🖊Both parents have a legal duty to maintain their children, even after separation or divorce.
🖊Adoption must follow a proper court process to protect the rights and interests of the child.

Family law is not only about resolving disputes. It is about protecting relationships and promoting fairness in the home.

Over to you reading this. What is your view? Do you believe custody of young children should always go to the mother, or should fathers be given equal consideration? I would like to hear your thoughts.
