‎GLOBAL MISSIONS WEEK DAY 2: THE CHURCH
‎
‎And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18

‎Today’s Reflection: We Are Christ’s Ekklesia
‎
‎What did Jesus mean when He said, “I will build my church”? The people who lived in Jesus’ day were already familiar with the word church, but its meaning was far different from what many imagine today. Those who heard Jesus speak could not have thought He was referring to a building or merely a religious gathering. No! They understood what the word meant.
‎
‎The word translated as church in our opening verse is ekklesia — “the called-out ones” or “a called-out assembly.” Long before Christianity, ekklesia was an entirely secular and political term. In ancient Athens, the Ekklesia was the official governing assembly that helped oversee the affairs of the territory. A close example today is the senate. They were responsible for making laws, planning, and organizing the state.

‎Why would the Lord choose such a word to describe His people? From what we have seen, His choice reveals God’s mind concerning our purpose on the earth. We are Christ’s Ekklesia, called out to represent His authority and express His will in our communities, cities, institutions, and nations. We are not bystanders in the affairs of the earth. Through our witness, prayers, influence, and obedience to Christ, we are called to reveal the government of heaven in the earth until the rapture of the saints. Glory Hallelujah!
