NNEKA'S DIARY XV
I quickly left his embrace so as not to completely give myself away.
"I like her," Kunle said.
"Who?"
"Grace."
I laughed.
"Oh, Grace is a handful."
The afternoon went smoothly.
Grace served fruits, pepper soup, and enough food to feed a small village.
While she moved in and out of the sitting room, Kunle and I spent time getting to know each other better.
At some point, Kunle suddenly pointed his spoon at me.
"Wait, Madam. You still owe me something."
"Owe you what?" I asked.
"The answer to my question."
"What question?"
"The Number One State."
I burst out laughing.
"You still remember that?"
"Of course I do. I was about to pay ₦500,000 school fees before somebody became angry."
I shook my head, laughing.
"Abia State." I said.
"Ohhh," he said thoughtfully. "Is it because it comes first alphabetically?"
I looked at him.
"Whatever."
He burst out laughing.
"No, seriously. Is that the reason?"
"Kunle, please eat your food." I said.
"So all this mystery and suspense was because of alphabet?"
I rolled my eyes.
"Believe whatever helps you sleep at night."
He laughed even harder.
"I paid ₦500,000 for this lesson. I deserve a proper explanation."
"Good thing you never paid. No refund policy applies."
We both laughed.
The conversation flowed effortlessly after that.
Before we knew it, darkness had fallen.
When the power went out, we realized it was already close to 8 p.m.
"How time flies whenever I'm with you," Kunle said.
Before long, Grace put on the generator.
Kunle stood up.
"Time to go."
He called Grace over, opened his bag, and brought out a wrapped bundle of cash.
"You didn't have to do that," I said.
"Please leave me alone and let me bless my sister-in-law."
"Sister-in-law?" I repeated.
But Grace had already collected the money.
"Abi ooo! Thank you, sir."
We all laughed.
Kunle called Kennedy, his driver, and shortly afterward they left.
The moment I entered the house, I asked Grace:
"How much did he give you?"
"Fifty thousand naira."
"Wow. Give me my share."
"Do you need money?"
"What kind of question is that?"
She folded her arms.
"You wey reject ₦500,000, how you go need money again? Abeg free me."
We both burst into laughter.
Next episode drops by 6pm.
