Your Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kano state government, opposition parties, independent candidates, courts, judiciary 240 million Nigerians are writing to express concerns regarding the recent report that the Kano State Government approved ₦2.5 billion for a mass wedding programme across the 44 Local Government Areas.
According to the Kano State Commissioner for Planning and Budget, this allocation was included in the 2025 budget to support mass weddings. While the intention may be to promote social welfare, many Nigerians believe that such a large sum could be better invested in long‑term development priorities.
Specifically, ₦2.5 billion could make a meaningful impact if directed toward:
Building free or low‑cost housing for all Kano state Nigerians
Expanding free access to quality healthcare and constructing hospitals
Improving public schools and strengthening education infrastructure
Addressing unemployment and poverty, which are root causes of insecurity
Supporting initiatives that counter radicalization and reduce the conditions that fuel groups like boko haram
Marriage is an important institution, and it is good when couples build stable homes. However, the recent statement from Hisbah warning couples not to divorce without board approval raises concerns. In cases of abuse or toxic relationships, individuals must have the right to seek legal protection and divorce through the courts, just as is done in the USA, UK, and nearly all 195 countries.
Nigeria has tremendous potential, and many around the world—including partners in the USA, UK, and other nations—have been observing our governance and development efforts for decades. No country is perfect, but Nigeria can continue to improve by prioritizing investments that strengthen communities and create lasting opportunities for 240 million Nigerians
We respectfully demand your office to encourage state governments to focus on sustainable development—housing, education, healthcare, and security—so that public funds deliver long‑term benefits for 240 million Nigerians
