NNEKA'S DIARY XIV

After church, Grace and I stopped by the market.
Trust my aproko sister.
She insisted on buying all sorts of things to prepare for Kunle's visit, even contributing her own money when I complained that some of the items weren't necessary.
"Grace, are we feeding one person or an entire village?" I asked.
She rolled her eyes.
"Sis, abeg leave me. First impression matters."
I laughed and left her to her mission.

Exactly 3 p.m., my phone rang.
"I'm at your gate," Kunle said.
I looked outside and saw a vehicle.
Before I could reach it, Kunle had already stepped out.
Without thinking, I ran into his arms and hugged him tightly.
The moment I realized what I had done, I quickly pulled away.

"Sorry," I muttered.
"For what?" he asked smiling.
I didn't answer.
We walked into the house together.
At the door, Grace welcomed him dramatically.
"Mr Kunle, welcome to our humble abode."
Kunle looked at me in surprise.
I introduced them.
"Grace, this is Kunle."
"Nice meeting you," he said.
"The pleasure is all mine, sir," Grace replied with a smile.

I knew that smile.
My sister had already started gathering material for future gist.
Grace disappeared into the kitchen while Kunle admired the house.

"You never told me you live with someone."
"It never came up."
"Oh, that's true. You were going to tell me about yourself before we quarreled the other day."

I looked at him. He smiled.
"You're still angry about the other day?"
I folded my arms.
"I'm not angry."
"Really?"
"Really."
"Good. Because I was beginning to think I was dating a woman who enjoys fighting."
I burst into laughter.
"Excuse me? Me?"
"Yes, you."
We both laughed.

For a few moments, neither of us spoke.
It wasn't uncomfortable.
It was one of those rare silences where you simply enjoy being in someone's presence.

Then he reached for my hand.
My heart immediately started racing.
"Nneka."
The way he called my name made me look up.
His eyes were fixed on mine.
I suddenly became nervous.
He pulled me gently closer.
"My Drama Queen," he whispered.

The smile on my face disappeared.
Not because I was unhappy.
But because I sensed he was about to say something important.
And then he said the words I never expected to hear so soon.
"I love you. Just like this."

For a moment, everything stood still.
The room.
The sounds from the kitchen.
Even my thoughts.
Did he just say he loves me?
I stared at him.
Speechless.
After everything that had happened, after all the prayers, confusion, assumptions, dreams, and emotions, hearing those words felt almost unreal.

I could hear my own heartbeat.
And in that moment, I almost melted in his arms.

To be continued ….

Comfort Yako Asala: The Drama Queen and her prince Charming never go a meeting without an argument or two.
Thank goodness they've come to a place of compromise where they don't pick offence at the slightest.

Mild Uchenna: Sometimes the most powerful moments are not the grand gestures, but the quiet ones that catch us off guard. After all the misunderstandings and uncertainty, those three words carry even more weight. Now the question is whether Nneka's heart is ready to say what her eyes already seem to be saying.
POULTRY AND FISHERY: Wow. I missed this episode 🔥
