Prominent Nigerians, including former INEC Chairman Attahiru Jega, ex-UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari, former ambassador Fatima Balla, and other respected leaders, have called on the Federal Government to urgently appoint a Special Envoy for the Sahel, warning that Nigeria’s growing insecurity is deeply linked to instability across the region. The group argued that banditry, kidnappings, arms trafficking, and extremist violence cannot be addressed without stronger cooperation between Nigeria, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), and ECOWAS. They urged immediate diplomatic engagement to rebuild trust, enhance intelligence sharing, strengthen border security, and coordinate regional responses to armed groups. Beyond security concerns, the eminent Nigerians also raised alarm over weakening constitutional checks and balances, claiming the erosion of institutional independence is fueling public distrust and instability.
