"Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties over alleged failure to meet constitutional requirements for continued registration.

The suit, filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators, is asking the court to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remove ADC, Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP), Accord Party and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) from the register of political parties.
The court orders the INEC to deregister the political parties for breach of section 225 of the constitution."

WHAT DOES SECTION 225A OF THE 1999 CONSTITUTION (4TH ALTERATION IN 2017) SAYS?

It provides thus:

The Independent National Electoral Commission shall have power to de-register a political party for-

(a) breach of any of the requirements for registration;

(b) failure to win at least twenty-five percent of votes cast in-
(i) one state of the Federation in a Presidential election, or
(ii) one Local Government of the State in a Governorship election.

(c) failure to win at least-
(i) one ward in the Chairmanship election,
(ii) one seat in the National or State House of Assembly election, or
(iii) one seat in the Councilorship election.
