I was concerned by the President’s suggestion that terrorists should be asked to surrender. If they were willing to do so, they likely would have back in 2009 when the crisis began in Borno State. Instead, the situation has spread to other parts of the country. In the early stages, they demanded small ransoms, but over time this has escalated significantly, with reports suggesting that billions of naira have been paid between 2023 and 2024. This shows how the situation has evolved and strengthened rather than being contained.
