It has been described as the story of the biggest fraud in African democracy. Thirty-three years after MKO Abiola won what is widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest election, a new documentary is revisiting the events that followed, from the annulment of June 12, 1993, to his imprisonment and eventual death in custody.
Directed by Ose Oyamendan, MKO made its World Premiere in International Competition at Sheffield DocFest on Nigeria’s Democracy Day, combining investigative journalism and political intrigue to examine a story that continues to shape the nation’s democratic journey.
