Inspiring Mathematicians 16: Zu Chongzhi

Zu Chongzhi was a Chinese mathematician, astronomer, engineer, and inventor who lived from 429 to 500 CE during the Liu Song and Southern Qi dynasties.

He is best known for calculating an exceptionally accurate value of π, determining it to lie between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927, a level of precision unmatched anywhere in the world for nearly a thousand years.

Zu also introduced the fraction 355/113, one of the most accurate rational approximations of π ever discovered in antiquity.

Beyond mathematics, he made important contributions to astronomy, calendar reform, and mechanical engineering, including the design of sophisticated instruments for observing celestial movements.

His achievements established him as one of the greatest mathematicians in Chinese history and one of the foremost mathematical minds of the ancient world.
