I Just Completed A Two-Week NHS Interview Masterclass. Here Is The Single Thing That Separated The Candidates Who Will Get Offers From Those Who Will Not.
Two weeks.
Doctors. Nurses. Physiotherapists. AHPs. HCAs.
Different professions. Different bands. Different specialties. Different countries of origin.
The same pattern. In every single session.
The candidates who will get offers are not the most qualified in the room.
They are not the ones with the most years of experience.
They are not even the ones who know the clinical content best.
The candidates who will get offers are the ones who walked into the session having made a decision.
The decision that says: I am not here to prove I am good enough. I am here to show who I already am — and to find out whether this is the right match.
That decision changes everything about how you sit. How you answer the first question. How you recover from the one you were not prepared for. How you end the interview.
The candidates who will not get offers — and I say this with care because every person in those sessions worked hard — are the ones still operating from a place of seeking permission.
Permission to belong in the NHS.
Permission to take up space in that room.
Permission to claim the clinical contributions that are legitimately theirs.
They trained in systems where professional hierarchy meant the most senior person's decision was the decision. Where a junior clinician claiming personal accountability was overstepping. Where escalating a disagreement in a meeting was professionally dangerous.
The NHS is built on a different principle.
Every registered clinician — from Band 3 HCA to NHS consultant — is personally accountable under their own registration.
The panel is not assessing whether you belong in the NHS.
They are assessing whether you know that you already do.
That is the work we did for two weeks.
