The Visa Question In Your NHS Interview. The Answer That Gets The Offer. The Answer That Ends It.
Most IMGs dread this moment in the interview.
The panel has asked five clinical questions. You have answered well. The energy in the room is positive.
And then someone asks:
"Do you require visa sponsorship?"
And everything changes.
Not because the question is difficult.
Because nobody has ever taught you how to answer it — so you say one of two things that immediately cost you the offer.
You either apologise for needing sponsorship.
Or you minimise it — "Yes, but it is not complicated" — which tells the panel you do not actually understand the process and that they may be managing it alone.
Here is the answer that works.
State it as a confirmed fact, not an apology.
Yes — I require a Certificate of Sponsorship under the Health and Care Worker Visa route. I want to be upfront about this from the outset because I believe in transparent communication in professional relationships.
Frame it as a process, not a problem.
The Health and Care Worker Visa is a well-established route specifically designed for NHS employment. The process from offer to visa approval typically takes eight to twelve weeks on the standard route. I have already [prepared / gathered / assembled] the documentation required from my side, so the process can move forward quickly once an offer is confirmed.
Signal that you understand the employer's obligations.
I have confirmed that this Trust holds an A-rated Sponsor Licence. I understand that you will issue a Defined Certificate of Sponsorship and I am ready to submit my visa application promptly.
End on professional confidence.
This is a process I have researched thoroughly. It has not been a barrier for the right employer — and I am here because I believe this is the right opportunity.
That is not an apology.
That is a clinician who communicates with transparency, prepares thoroughly, and treats a professional process as exactly that — a process.
The offer follows the person who demonstrates composure. Not the person who treats sponsorship as a confession.
DM me "VISA" and I will send you the complete sponsorship question framework for your specific profession and grade.
Post 5 drops at 5:00 PM — and it covers something none of your colleagues are talking about but every NHS hiring manager is watching for.
