NNEKA'S DIARY XI

"Please say something," Kunle said.

"You barely know me," I finally replied.

"My instincts have never failed me," he said. "And I don't think they're about to start now."

I looked into his eyes.
"Is that a yes?" he asked.
I nodded.
"Yes."

He immediately pulled me to my feet, kissed my forehead, and whispered, "Thank you."

Inside, I was overjoyed.
Outside, I tried my best to remain composed.

"There is something else," he continued. "For the remaining six months until the one-year mourning period is complete, we can only meet here or in your house."

"Why here?" I asked.
"For privacy."

I looked around. "What makes you think this place is a safe haven?"

He smiled. "Has anyone entered this room since the waiter left?"
I shook my head.
"I guess you've answered your own question." He said.

I smiled too.

Then he said, "Tell me about yourself. I want to know everything."
I glanced at my wristwatch. It was already 7 p.m. Time really does fly when you're with someone you care about.

I began. "My name is Nneka Juliet Ezihe. I'm from the Number One State—"

"Wait, wait," he interrupted. "What's the Number One State?"

I stared at him. "You're a Nigerian and you don't know the Number One State?"

"Please educate me, my lady."

I smiled. "I like the sound of that” I said.
Which part do you like? 'Educate me' or 'my lady'?" He asked.
"Both." I said.

We laughed. A real laugh. The kind that comes naturally.

"How much are you willing to pay for the lesson?" I asked.

"Name your price."

"Five hundred thousand naira."

"And your account details?"

I jokingly mentioned my bank and account number.

When I looked up, Kunle was busy pressing his phone.

Immediately, my mood changed.

Could he really be on his phone while I was talking?
Had he stopped listening?
Or worse... was he chatting with another woman?

I sighed.
I guess men will always be men.
