Your Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Opposition parties, independent parties Courts, Judiciary, EFCC 240 million Nigerians write to you with deep concern regarding the arrest and detention of Opeyemi Owoeye, the editor of KOGI Reports, who was taken into custody on June 11, 2026, by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). His arrest followed the publication of a report alleging that Hon. Leke Abejide attempted to use the office of the President’s Chief of Staff to influence the APC Kogi West senatorial primary.

Your Excellency, Nigeria’s democracy is anchored on freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the protection of journalists who serve as watchdogs for the nation. Silencing the press, intentionally or unintentionally, sends a troubling message to the 240 million Nigerians who rely on transparency and accountability in governance.

We respectfully demand you to call Hon. Leke Abejide to order and ensure that no harm befalls Opeyemi Owoeye. The journalist should be released immediately and allowed to return home safely. The global community is watching, and Nigeria must continue to uphold its commitment to democratic values.

Furthermore, the NSCDC should focus its resources on protecting 240 million Nigerians, rescuing abducted children, and combating threats such as boko haram. Press freedom must never be treated as a crime.

If there are allegations of political interference in the APC Kogi West senatorial primary, we respectfully request that the courts and the EFCC investigate the matter thoroughly. Any claims should be supported by verifiable video evidence made accessible to the public to ensure transparency.

Your Excellency, this moment presents an opportunity to reaffirm Nigeria’s leadership in defending democratic freedoms. We trust in your commitment to justice and the rule of law.
