Your Excellency Esteemed United States lawmaker, Representative Riley Moore, 240 million Nigerians thank you for your recent attention to the passage of Nigeria’s state police bill and for acknowledging the insecurity challenges affecting the country. Your concern for the safety of Nigerians is sincerely appreciated. Respectfully sir 240 million Nigerians do, however, wish to respectfully offer a broader perspective. The violence in Nigeria has affected both Christians and Muslims since 1999. Communities across the country—regardless of religion—have suffered deeply from terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings.
While the passage of the state police bill is a positive step, many Nigerians fear that it may remain only on paper without proper implementation. The root causes of insecurity must be addressed for any reform to succeed. This includes tackling corruption at all levels of government, strengthening the justice system, and ensuring accountability from leaders such as President Tinubu, Senate President Akpabio, and the courts. No country or leaders are perfect but Nigerian government can do better if they are serious
Nigeria has the potential to do far better. Instead of continued borrowing and high salaries for top officials, resources could be redirected toward:
Deploying CCTV cameras and drones across all 36 states and 774 local government areas
Creating jobs for millions of young Nigerians and graduates
Investing in agriculture and food security
Building free hospitals, schools, and affordable housing
Ensuring that state police officers wear body cameras for transparency and accountability
We also plead for continued U.S. attention and pressure on the Nigerian government to address the root causes of boko haram and other extremist violence, to fight corruption effectively, and to secure the release of children kidnapped since 1999.
Once again, thank you for your concern for Nigeria’s security challenges. Your voice brings hope to many who have suffered for far too long.
