Today (Thursday, June 11, 2026), the House of Representatives officially passed the State Police Bill, marking a historic turning point for Nigeria’s security framework. The session featured significant momentum and a bit of logistical drama. In a landslide decision, 289 lawmakers voted in favor of the bill, while only 4 voted against it. Because the House's electronic voting system was down today, lawmakers had to vote manually by a show of hands based on attendance to clear the constitutional requirement.
There was a brief pushback early in the session when a lawmaker raised a point of order, arguing that the final document from the Constitution Review Committee had just been handed to them this afternoon. However, the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, overruled the objection to avoid delaying the critical vote.
