An Open Letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
Your Excellency,
When you declared that it was your turn to lead Nigeria, many Nigerians believed you were prepared to confront and repair the deep challenges facing our nation. They saw in you a veteran of the democratic struggle, a former governor with vast political experience, and a man whose personal success meant he could afford to place the national interest above personal gain.
Three years into your presidency, a question lingers in the minds of many citizens: What would you like to be remembered for? What will be your legacy?
History is often kinder to leaders who think beyond their tenure and beyond themselves. Power is temporary, but legacy endures. Future generations will not remember the number of political alliances built or opponents defeated. They will remember whether ordinary Nigerians lived better lives because of the decisions made under your leadership.
Today, millions of Nigerians face economic hardship. Families struggle to afford food, businesses battle rising costs, and young people increasingly question whether their future lies within the country. The challenges are immense, but so too is the opportunity before you.
Many Nigerians believed that having fought for democracy and having attained great personal wealth, you would be uniquely positioned to govern with selflessness. They hoped you would make difficult decisions not for political advantage but for the long-term prosperity of the nation. They expected a leader concerned more with nation-building than political calculations.
Mr. President, every leader eventually reaches a moment when history asks a simple question: What did you do with the power entrusted to you?
The Nigeria of today needs more than political victories. It needs a government that inspires confidence, rewards merit, strengthens institutions, creates opportunities, and restores hope. It needs leadership that sees public office as a responsibility rather than an entitlement.
As you reflect on the remaining years of your administration, perhaps the most important question is not whether you can win another political battle, but whether you can win a place in the hearts of Nigerians and in the pages of history as a leader who put the nation first.
One day, your children and grandchildren will read about your time in office. What story would you want them to read? That you inherited a troubled nation and left it stronger, fairer, and more prosperous? Or that you had a historic opportunity and allowed it to slip away?
The choice, Mr. President, remains yours.
Nigeria is watching. History is recording. And future generations will deliver the final verdict.
