Unlike many mammals that actively search for mates, a female sloth in estrus often advertises her availability by producing loud, repeated vocal calls from the canopy.

These calls can carry surprisingly far through the rainforest, helping males locate her despite the animals' famously slow movement and solitary lifestyle.

Researchers have observed females calling for several days while receptive, attracting one or more males to the area.

If multiple males arrive, they may compete for access to the female before mating.

Because sloths spend nearly their entire lives in trees and encounter one another infrequently, these vocalizations are an efficient way to find a mate in dense forests where visibility is limited.
