Nigeria's Leadership Crisis
Nigeria may be one of the few countries where leaders who clearly fail to solve the nation's problems still cling desperately to power. Deep down, many know they are not capable of addressing the challenges facing the country, yet they remain determined to occupy public office.
For too many politicians, the presidency and other elected positions have become avenues for personal enrichment rather than platforms for public service. The goal appears to be access to the commonwealth, the ability to reward loyalists, punish opponents, and wield power without accepting the responsibilities that come with leadership.
Meanwhile, Nigeria continues to bleed. It is a nation blessed with some of the brightest minds in the world. Nigerians excel in science, medicine, engineering, business, technology, and academia across the globe. Yet, despite this abundance of talent, the country struggles to find genuine leaders capable of placing national interest above personal ambition.
The truth is that greed and self-interest have hijacked the political process. The system has been designed in such a way that ordinary men and women are effectively excluded from meaningful participation. Political parties have become gatekeepers rather than vehicles for democracy.
How can a reasonable society justify nomination forms costing tens of millions of naira? How can democracy thrive when only the wealthy can afford to seek public office? Such barriers ensure that leadership remains the preserve of a privileged few.
We are often told that wealthy politicians are less likely to steal because they already have money. But this argument raises an important question: where did many of these politicians acquire their wealth in the first place? In a country where poverty is widespread and opportunities are limited, citizens have every right to demand transparency about the sources of the fortunes that finance political ambitions.
Nigeria's greatest challenge is not the lack of capable people. It is the capture of political institutions by individuals and groups who benefit from maintaining the status quo. Until the system is opened up to competent, honest, and service-driven citizens, the country will continue to struggle to realize its enormous potential.
The future of Nigeria depends on restoring accountability, lowering barriers to political participation, and ensuring that leadership is based on competence, integrity, and vision rather than wealth, influence, and connections.
