In many African traditions, marriage is not merely a contract between two individuals; it is a union between families, ancestors, and the community.

Even after death, the bond is considered to persist in a liminal state until certain rites of passage (funerary rites) are completed. By moving another woman into your home immediately, a man is often viewed as "defiling" the space he shared with the departed.

Traditional belief systems often hold that the deceased transitions into an ancestor. Failure to observe the mourning period is viewed as an act of disrespect toward the departed’s spirit. It is widely believed that such actions can invite spiritual turbulence, manifesting as "bad luck," restlessness, or a perceived lack of favor from the ancestors who oversee the family line.
