Nigeria’s fertiliser exports generated an impressive N1.37 trillion in the first quarter of 2026, making urea one of the country’s top export earners and highlighting the growing importance of industrial manufacturing in the nation’s economy. According to the latest trade data, fertiliser ranked behind only crude oil and natural gas, outperforming traditional agricultural exports such as cocoa, sesame, cashew and soybeans.
The strong performance reflects the expanding influence of Nigeria’s domestic fertiliser industry, particularly the Dangote Fertiliser Plant, Africa’s largest granulated urea facility. Export earnings from fertiliser rose significantly from N1 trillion in Q4 2025 and N855.85 billion in Q1 2025, demonstrating increasing global demand and Nigeria’s growing capacity to process and export higher-value products.
While oil and gas still account for the bulk of export revenues, fertiliser contributed more than 40% of total non-oil exports, offering a compelling example of how manufacturing-led exports can diversify foreign exchange earnings, create domestic value and reduce dependence on crude oil over time.
