Fresh tensions have emerged within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following a war of words between the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal. Atiku dismissed Lawal’s allegations surrounding the ADC presidential primary, describing them as speculation, political revisionism and claims unsupported by evidence.

Through his spokesman, Atiku argued that Lawal failed to present any verifiable proof of wrongdoing during the primary process, insisting that accusations without evidence amounted to little more than personal disappointment over the outcome. He also accused Lawal of backing another aspirant and attempting to recast his preferred candidate’s defeat as a matter of principle.

However, Lawal stood by his position, arguing that former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi worked harder than any other aspirant to secure the ADC ticket. He claimed Amaechi actively campaigned and engaged delegates, while Atiku maintained a lower public profile throughout the process, leaving many observers wondering how he intended to win.

The exchange has reignited conversations about transparency, internal democracy and the dynamics that shaped one of the opposition’s most closely watched presidential contests.
