Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has unveiled plans to sponsor a constitutional amendment bill seeking to replace Nigeria’s current two-term tenure structure for presidents and governors with a single six-year term. He said the proposal is part of a broader reform agenda aimed at improving governance, reducing the distractions of re-election campaigns and strengthening democratic institutions.

Beyond constitutional reforms, Bamidele called on the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to publicly disclose the salaries, allowances and benefits of all public office holders to address misconceptions about lawmakers’ earnings. He also defended the Senate’s decision against a public probe of military spending during ongoing counterterrorism operations, arguing that existing oversight mechanisms remain in place.

The Senate Leader further backed tougher anti-kidnapping measures, including the death penalty for convicted offenders, while rejecting claims that the 10th Senate operates as a rubber stamp for the executive. He maintained that collaboration with the presidency has helped advance key reforms in taxation, education, agriculture and economic development.
