A fish in the United States can breathe air, survive on land for days, and has no natural predators. Wildlife officials have one instruction for anyone who catches it: ki11 it immediately.

The northern snakehead (Channa argus) is an invasive species native to China, Russia, and Korea. It has now spread to at least a dozen US states, including New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Missouri, Georgia, and Arkansas — and it is still spreading.

What makes it unlike almost any other fish: it has a special chamber next to its gills that lets it breathe atmospheric oxygen. As long as its skin stays moist, it can survive out of water for up to four days — and it uses its fins to drag itself across land in search of new water bodies, sometimes crossing roads.

It has no natural enemies in American waters. It e@ts native fish, amphibians, and crustaceans, and a single female can carry up to 50,000 eggs at a time. In new territory, it does not compete — it dominates.

State wildlife agencies now advise anyone who catches one to ki11 it on the spot by sev€ring the he@d, gutt1ng it, or s€aling it in a plastic bag. Do not throw it back under any circumstances.
