Inspiring Mathematicians 13: Pappus of Alexandria

Pappus of Alexandria was a Greek mathematician who lived around the fourth century CE and is regarded as one of the last great mathematicians of antiquity.

His most important work, Collection (Synagoge), preserved and summarized many mathematical discoveries of earlier Greek scholars that might otherwise have been lost.

Pappus made original contributions to geometry and provided elegant proofs and generalizations of important mathematical theorems.

His work influenced later developments in projective geometry and inspired mathematicians during the Renaissance and beyond.

Through both his own discoveries and his preservation of earlier knowledge, Pappus played a crucial role in the transmission of ancient mathematics.
