Water is actually one of the best substances for removing heat from an engine because it has a very high specific heat capacity. This means it can absorb a lot of heat before its temperature rises significantly.
Advantages of water:
Excellent heat transfer – cools the engine more effectively than most coolant concentrates.
Cheap and readily available.
Environmentally friendly.
However, pure water also has major disadvantages:
It freezes at 0°C, which can crack engine components in cold weather.
It boils at 100°C, increasing the risk of overheating.
It can cause rust and corrosion inside the radiator, water pump, and engine passages.
It provides no lubrication for the water pump seals.
That's why manufacturers recommend a mixture of water and coolant (antifreeze), typically around 50% water and 50% coolant. The coolant additives:
Raise the boiling point.
Lower the freezing point.
Prevent corrosion and rust.
Lubricate the water pump.
Reduce scale buildup inside the cooling system.
In a hot climate like Nigeria, plain water may cool slightly better, but a proper water-coolant mixture gives much better long-term protection for the engine and cooling system.
