LEGACY PROJECTS

It's as though our state governors have a peer review forum where they decide on what projects to engage in at any time in the name of legacy projects. One of such so-called legacy projects is overhead bridges.

There's hardly any state capital today that doesn't boast of these monstrous blend of solid concrete and steel doting the landscape.

While flyovers are very desirable to provide free flow of traffic in busy cities like Lagos, PH, Abuja, Kano and a few other big cities, in many other state capitals what causes apparent traffic logjams at some road junctions is lack of motorable intracity roads. In the absence of good link roads motorists naturally head for the only one or two good roads in town, leading to traffic gridlocks.

In such towns, and even the big cities, it is more profitable for the governments to deploy the tens of billions of naira used in building one or two kilometers of flyovers to construct several local streets, collector streets, sub-arterial and arterial roads within the cities.

Good inner city roads will take away traffic pressure from the main city highway.

Good intracity road networks also naturally enhance the city's aesthetics.

Not to mention the added boosts to the worth of properties around the town.

But politicians live in their own world, completely detached from the true needs of the citizens. So expect to see more of the flyovers spring up (which they love to celebrate) while the city inhabitants grapple with terrible roads just few metres away from their pet projects.
