Men's Mental Health
Mike grew up as a jovial lad with a singular passion: football. Whether he was playing on the pitch, watching a match, or analyzing tactics, football was his life.
From his secondary school days, he trained relentlessly, harboring a deep dream of turning professional.
But his parents couldn’t see a future in his ambition. They did everything they could to deter him, pushing him instead toward a "safer" path. To please them, Mike obliged, enrolling at FCE Zaria to pursue a degree in education.
Yet, the dream never truly left him. Stranded between the life he wanted and the life forced upon him, Mike spent years quietly struggling with himself and the world.
Earlier today, a phone call shattered my morning. I learned that Mike had passed away—alone in his room.
As we talked, friends recalled how pale and tattered he had looked in recent months, his unfulfilled football dreams heavy on his shoulders. Looking back, the signs of depression were loud, yet invisible until it was too late.
June is Men’s Mental Health Month. It is a vital time to raise awareness, dismantle the stigma, and remind every man: you do not have to carry the weight alone.
Society often teaches men to “tough it out” and bury their emotions. But true strength lies in recognizing when you are drowning and reaching out for a lifeline. Emotional health is just as critical as physical health. There is absolutely no shame in seeking support.
