The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has warned that global airlines face an additional $100 billion fuel bill in 2026, forcing carriers to raise ticket prices as jet fuel costs soar following disruptions to oil supplies. Speaking at IATA’s summit in Brazil, Director General Willie Walsh said higher oil prices will inevitably translate into higher airfares, with industry profits projected to fall by half to $23 billion despite continued passenger growth. Long-haul and premium travelers are expected to bear much of the increase. IATA also identified Nigeria as one of the world’s most expensive countries for airline operations, citing excessive taxes, charges and high operating costs that hinder airline profitability and competitiveness. The association urged ECOWAS countries to cut aviation taxes by 25% to boost connectivity, reduce fares and support industry growth.
