Africa CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) have launched a $518 million joint preparedness and response plan to combat the ongoing Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus and strengthen Africa’s health security. Covering June to November 2026, the initiative adopts a unified “One Response” approach, bringing together governments, partners and communities to enhance surveillance, laboratory testing, clinical care, infection control, research, logistics and emergency coordination. The plan prioritizes vulnerable populations, cross-border collaboration and rapid response capabilities while supporting ongoing efforts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. With no approved vaccine or treatment currently available for the Bundibugyo strain, Africa CDC and WHO say stronger health systems, sustained funding and community trust are critical to containing the outbreak. The strategy also seeks to bolster preparedness against future health threats while maintaining responses to mpox, cholera and measles.
