Nigeria recorded a significant improvement in its external trade position in the first quarter of 2026, with the merchandise trade surplus rising to N7.55trn, a 340.88% increase on the preceding quarter, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The improvement was largely supported by lower petroleum product imports and higher crude oil export earnings during the period.
