Respectfully U.S. lawmakers have proposed visa bans and sanctions
Multiple U.S. Congress members introduced bills in 2026 seeking visa bans and asset freezes against specific Nigerian political figures and groups accused of severe abuses, including corruption and religious persecution.

A coalition of over 70 international NGOs also petitioned Western governments (including the U.S.) to impose visa bans on Nigerian officials accused of corruption.

U.S. lawmakers proposed sanctions — including visa bans — on figures such as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and leaders of Miyetti Allah under the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026.

These actions are not yet universal visa bans
The proposals target specific individuals and groups, not all Nigerian politicians.
They focus on:

Alleged corruption

Religious persecution

Human rights violations

Militia-linked violence

Civil society pressure is increasing
NGOs have formally asked the U.S. Embassy to impose visa bans on officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and others accused of corruption.
This shows growing international pressure, but not all requests have resulted in official U.S. sanctions yet.

The U.S. has not issued a blanket visa ban on all corrupt Nigerian politicians.
However, U.S. lawmakers have actively pushed for targeted visa bans and sanctions against specific Nigerian political figures and groups accused of corruption or human rights abuses.
