Your Excellencies Esteemed Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, 240 million Nigerians are writing to respectfully express concern and offer clarification regarding the recent statement highlighting targeted killings, abductions, sexual violence, and forced conversions against Christians, Muslims and other minority groups in Nigeria.
While these atrocities are real and deeply painful, it is important to emphasize that both Christians and Muslims across Nigeria have suffered widespread killings, kidnappings, and violence for many decades. The insecurity affects families of every faith and ethnicity, and the suffering is shared by communities across the North, Middle Belt, and beyond.
For decades, successive Nigerian governments—past and present, ruling and opposition—have failed to address the root causes of boko haram and other armed groups. Since 1999, corruption, weak institutions, and lack of accountability have allowed insecurity to grow unchecked. Nigerian children have been kidnapped, displaced, and traumatized for over decades, with thousands still missing.
Respectfully Nigeria urgently needs the support and pressure of the United States, the United Kingdom, all 195 UN member states, and the international community to compel meaningful reforms. The Nigerian people are calling for:
Addressing the root causes of boko haram through economic opportunity and anti-corruption reforms
Draining corruption across all sectors, including the executive, judiciary, police, military, and security agencies
Reforming or abolishing ineffective institutions and rebuilding trust in law enforcement
Creating jobs for over 240 million Nigerians, especially youth and graduates
Investing national savings into agriculture, housing, healthcare, and education across all 36 states and 774 local governments
Ensuring police, military, and air force personnel wear body cameras
Installing CCTV cameras nationwide and recovering stolen funds allocated for these projects
Hiring Nigerian law graduates to investigate corruption, recover public money, and prosecute offenders
Providing free electricity, internet access, and essential services long promised to 240 million Nigerians
Rescuing all kidnapped children since 1999 and ensuring they receive free housing, education, and healthcare
Nigeria is a nation with enormous potential, but corruption and insecurity continue to destroy lives and futures. We believe the UN and global partners can play a critical role in urging the Nigerian government, opposition parties, and independent actors to take decisive action. We do not want Nigeria to be like Libya respectfully this is a humble request
We respectfully ask the UN to consider a broader framing of the crisis—one that acknowledges the suffering of all Nigerian communities and pushes for comprehensive reforms that address the systemic issues fueling violence.
