The Framework Every NHS Panel Is Scoring You Against — And That Nobody Told You About.
If you walked into an NHS interview tomorrow and the panel asked you: How does your practice align with Good Medical Practice? — what would you say?
Most internationally trained doctors say something like: I always put the patient first and I practice evidence-based medicine.
The panel scores them a 1 out of 4.
Not because the answer is wrong. Because it demonstrates that the doctor has not read the document that governs every aspect of registered medical practice in the UK — and that the panel has been specifically trained to assess them against.
Good Medical Practice is the GMC's core professional standards framework — updated most recently in January 2024. It is not a guideline.
It is the definitive statement of what it means to be a good doctor in the UK, and it is the scoring framework that NHS interview panels at Trust Grade SHO, Clinical Fellow, registrar, and consultant level use to assess your answers.
It is organized into four domains. And every NHS medical interview question — every single one — maps onto one or more of these domains.
Domain 1 — Knowledge, skills, and performance. Developing and maintaining your clinical competence. Applying knowledge to clinical decision-making. Recognizing and working within your limits of competence.
Referring to colleagues when the situation exceeds your expertise. Keeping your practice up to date through CPD and revalidation.
The interview questions that map here:
-Tell us about a clinical situation where you recognized the limits of your expertise.
-Describe how you ensure your clinical knowledge remains current.
-What audit or quality improvement activity have you been involved in?
Domain 2 — Safety and quality. Contributing to the safety and quality of patient care. Raising concerns about risks to patient safety. Responding to patient safety incidents appropriately. Participating in systems of quality improvement.
The interview questions that map here:
-Tell us about a clinical incident or near-miss.
-What would you do if you had a concern about a colleague's practice?
-How do you contribute to patient safety in your clinical work?
Domain 3 — Communication, partnership, and teamwork. Communicating effectively with patients and colleagues. Working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
Treating patients as partners in their care. Supporting colleagues and contributing to the education of others.
The interview questions that map here:
-Describe a situation where you had to communicate difficult news to a patient.
-Tell us about a time you worked within a multidisciplinary team.
-Describe a conflict with a colleague and how you resolved it.
Domain 4 — Maintaining trust. Behaving with honesty and integrity in all professional dealings. Acting in patients' best interests. Maintaining appropriate professional boundaries. Being open when things go wrong — the Duty of Candour.
The interview questions that map here:
-Tell us about a time you made a mistake.
-Describe a situation where you had to act with courage in your professional practice.
-What does professionalism mean to you?
Here is what changes when you know this framework before you walk into the room:
You stop answering interview questions as isolated stories. You start answering them as evidence submissions against a documented professional standard that the panel is specifically scoring you against.
Every answer becomes: This is my specific evidence of [Domain X] of Good Medical Practice — presented with a named example, a named outcome, and a named reflection.
That is what a Band 6 answer looks like at Trust Grade level. That is what a consultant-level answer looks like. That is the difference between a score of 1 and a score of 4 on every governance competency the panel is assessing.

Post 3 lands at 11:00 AM — and it is for the physiotherapist and AHP who thinks their interview will be different from a doctor's because they are being assessed against HCPC standards, not GMC.
