A Somali referee named Omar Artan was selected by FIFA to officiate at the World Cup. However, he was not allowed to enter the United States.

Because he had difficulty getting a visa, the Somali Embassy in Nairobi helped him obtain a diplomatic passport.

Despite this support, U.S. immigration authorities did not accept his travel documents and sent him back immediately.

Omar Artan is a highly respected referee in Africa. He officiated the second leg of the African Champions League final between Pyramids FC and Mamelodi Sundowns. He was also named the Best African Referee of 2025 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The incident has attracted attention because he was chosen by FIFA for a major international tournament but was unable to enter the host country.
