Taiwan has sharply criticized China after Chinese Coast Guard vessels conducted patrols in waters east of the island, describing the move as a provocative challenge to its sovereignty and a form of psychological pressure. Speaking before parliament, Taiwan’s Defence Minister Wellington Koo accused Beijing of attempting to expand its maritime claims and intimidate the island through what he called “cognitive warfare.” The patrols came shortly after Japan and the Philippines announced plans to begin formal talks on maritime boundary delimitation, a development China views as involving waters near Taiwan. In response, Taiwan’s Coast Guard deployed vessels to confront the Chinese ships, stating that the vessels were warned away and eventually left the area. The latest incident adds to growing tensions across the Taiwan Strait and raises fresh concerns over maritime security and competing territorial claims in the region.
