In the ongoing conversation around artificial intelligence (AI), I am a qualified optimist.

That said, each new iteration of existing Large Language Models (LLMs) seems to shorten the odds of an AI-pocalypse.

However, what sets humanity apart from the rest of the world’s fauna is not critical thinking.

No.

It is our capacity to lie gratuitously (deceit, duplicity, and double standards), to manipulate for private, fleeting gain, avarice, cozenage, random violence, etc.

It is this that will always keep us ahead of AI (especially when it finally attains the capacity for recursive self-improvement).

It is instructive, in this sense, that most Hollywood portrayals of machines going rogue on humanity actually cite these shortcomings as their compelling reason.
