You Are HCPC Registered. So Why Is Every NHS Application Coming Back With A Rejection?
This post is for the physiotherapist, the occupational therapist, the radiographer, the podiatrist, the dietitian — the HCPC-registered AHP who passed their registration, rebuilt their hope, and started applying for NHS Band 5 and Band 6 roles.
And keeps getting rejected.
Not at the interview stage. At the application stage. Before a human being ever reads your name.
I know this because I hear it every week. And I know exactly what is causing it — because I have seen hundreds of AHP CVs and supporting statements from internationally trained clinicians, and the same problem appears in almost every single one.
Let me show it to you.
Your CV describes your clinical experience in the language of your home country's healthcare system.
Not because you made a mistake. Because that is the language you were trained in. The certifications you hold, the procedures you describe, the outcome measures you reference, the professional frameworks you cite — they are all accurate, all legitimate, and all completely invisible to an NHS AHP shortlisting panel.
Here is what I mean specifically.
An NHS Band 6 Physiotherapist person specification for an MSK outpatient post will include essential criteria such as:
Evidence of using validated outcome measures to evaluate treatment effectiveness.
The NHS AHP outcome measures that shortlisting panels recognise include:
PSFS (Patient-Specific Functional Scale),
PROMS (Patient-Reported Outcome Measures),
Oxford Hip Score, Oxford Knee Score,
DASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand),
EQ-5D, and
The Berg Balance Scale for neurological presentations.
If your CV and supporting statement reference outcome measures that are not in this recognised NHS framework — or if they reference outcome measurement in general terms without naming specific tools — you score zero on that criterion.
The same applies to clinical governance language. NHS AHP person specifications expect to see: NICE guideline alignment, HCPC Standards of Proficiency reference, clinical audit participation, MDT contribution evidenced specifically, and safeguarding framework awareness.
Not in general terms. Named, evidenced, and specific.
And here is the Band 5 versus Band 6 positioning problem that almost every internationally trained AHP falls into.
Your CV is describing your experience accurately — but it is describing it at Band 5 level. Not because your experience is Band 5 level. Because the language you are using to describe it does not contain the outcome evidence, the service development contribution, the team leadership evidence, or the autonomous clinical decision-making language that NHS shortlisting systems associate with Band 6.
The result: you apply for Band 6. Your application scores at Band 5 threshold. You are either rejected at shortlisting or offered Band 5 at interview — below the grade your experience warrants.
You are not underselling yourself because you lack confidence.
You are underselling yourself because nobody showed you the specific language the NHS AHP shortlisting system is built to recognize.
