Automatic Identification System Can Be Manipulated, Nigeria Needs Stronger Maritime Surveillancen - Kaki

This is what we call spoofing. Every vessel is expected to transmit its Automatic Identification System (AIS) signal to enable authorities to track its location and movements. However, AIS signals can be manipulated, allowing a vessel that is actually within our waters to appear as though it is somewhere else entirely. This poses a serious security risk and underscores the need for more advanced surveillance technology. We must develop capabilities beyond AIS to accurately identify and monitor every vessel entering our waters, whether operating on the surface or beneath it, so that we always know who is in our territorial waters and what activities they are carrying out.
