NHS INTERVIEW MASTERCLASS — DAY 6

The Question That Separates Band 5 From Band 6

Yesterday we covered the values station.

Today we go somewhere harder.

Because there is a specific moment in every NHS interview — at every band above Band 5 — where the panel stops assessing your clinical knowledge and starts assessing something else entirely.

They stop asking what you would do as a clinician.

They start asking what you would do as a leader.

This is the moment where internationally trained clinicians — some of the most experienced, most committed, most clinically capable professionals I have ever worked with — consistently underscore.

Not because they cannot lead. Because nobody told them that in the NHS, leadership is not a grade. It is a behaviour. And it is expected at Band 5.

Let me say that again, because it is the insight that changes everything.

In the NHS, leadership is not reserved for the people with "Manager" in their job title. It is expected of every registered clinician, at every band, from the first shift.

The NMC Code is explicit: registered nurses are required to provide leadership, promote professionalism, and demonstrate the values and behaviours expected of all nursing and care staff.

The NHS Leadership Model — formerly the Healthcare Leadership Model developed by the NHS Leadership Academy — describes nine leadership dimensions that apply to every NHS employee regardless of their grade.

When a Band 5 panel asks you a leadership question — and they will — they are not asking whether you have managed a team. They are asking whether you understand that professional accountability, clinical decision-making under pressure, mentoring a colleague, or raising a concern through the correct governance pathway are all acts of leadership.

And when a Band 6 or Band 7 panel asks you a leadership question, they are asking whether you can evidence that you have already been doing this — with outcomes, with team impact, with measurable results.

Today I am giving you everything you need to answer every leadership and management question at every band — from Band 5 through to Band 7.

The framework. The language. The scored answer structure. And the single most important insight about NHS leadership that will change the way you present your entire career.

Day 6- Leadership and Management. The station that decides the band.

📋 What's your target band — Band 5, 6, or 7 — and your specialty. I will tell you the specific leadership competency that panel will weight most heavily. (Band 5,6,7 Nurses. Others will follow next week)

Stay tuned — Post 2 lands at 9:00 AM and it covers the leadership model the NHS actually uses to score your answers. Most candidates have never heard of it.
