After observing the primary elections conducted by various political parties in Nigeria, I have come to the conclusion that there is little difference between most of the parties and politicians. The events leading up to and during the primaries have shown that personal interests, political calculations, and the pursuit of power often take precedence over ideology, principles, and the welfare of the people.
Many Nigerians had hoped that opposition parties would provide a credible alternative and strengthen our democracy through healthy competition and accountability. However, the frequent movement of politicians from one party to another, the similarities in their political conduct, and the controversies surrounding party primaries have created the impression that there is no real opposition in the current democratic system.
Democracy thrives when there are clear choices, strong institutions, and political actors who are committed to serving the people. Unfortunately, when political parties appear to operate in the same manner and politicians easily switch allegiances without regard for principles, public confidence in the democratic process is weakened.
This observation is not intended to discourage participation in democracy but to encourage political parties and leaders to reflect on their actions. Nigerians deserve a political system where parties are distinguished by their values, policies, and commitment to good governance, rather than by the personalities who occupy positions of power.
For our democracy to grow stronger, political leaders must place national interest above personal ambition, while political parties must rebuild public trust through transparency, internal democracy, and genuine accountability. Only then can citizens truly believe that there are meaningful choices and a credible opposition within Nigeria's democratic system.
