Hipparchus was a pioneering Greek mathematician, astronomer, and geographer who lived around 190–120 BCE and is widely regarded as the founder of trigonometry.

Working primarily on the island of Rhodes, he developed the first known trigonometric tables, enabling astronomers to calculate angles and distances with unprecedented accuracy.

Hipparchus made significant advances in observational astronomy, including the discovery of the precession of the equinoxes and the creation of one of the earliest comprehensive star catalogs.

By combining careful observation with mathematical analysis, he established methods that greatly improved the study of celestial motion and influenced both Islamic and European astronomy for centuries.
