Muhammad Ali is remembered ten years after his passing all over the world. A champion boxer and civil rights icon, Ali used his platform to stand up for what he believed in and inspire us all. Now, he's also being remembered through a new global initiative designed to encourage acts of service in communities around the world. The Muhammad Ali Center announced the inaugural “Day of Compassion” on June 3, the tenth anniversary of the boxing legend’s passing in Louisville, Kentucky.

The annual event is built around one of Ali’s most enduring messages: “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.”

“June 3rd marks 10 years since Muhammad’s passing. What a different world we find ourselves,” said Lonnie Ali, Muhammad Ali’s wife. “The call to engage and be of service to your neighbor, community and nation is more urgent than ever.”

Ali’s achievements inside the ropes secured his place among boxing’s immortals. However, the Center hopes the annual observance will focus attention on the values he carried long after the final bell.

The organization plans for the Day of Compassion to become an annual event held every June 3, ensuring one of Ali’s most famous messages continues to be put into practice rather than simply remembered.
