I lost my loving and ever-treasured mum years before I got married. I had a mother who would not tolerate anyone speaking ill of or maltreating her daughters-in-law. So I told God, "If I ever get married, please give me a mother-in-law like my mother." And He did.

My mother-in-law was a woman who loved me unconditionally from the onset, even when most of her children didn't particularly like me. She didn't care. She showed me so much love, and I reciprocated it to the best of my ability, even till the very end.

Mama, my children and I were waiting to receive you on Monday, but you never arrived. I would have come with them but decided to wait here and give you the welcome you deserved. The night before, my daughter and I made a list of things to buy and things to do for your comfort. We waited. Then we were told your destination had changed. I inquired several times, only to be told you had left on the journey of no return. It broke my heart—not because God hasn't tried in your existence, not because you weren't old enough to leave this world—but because we really wanted to see you one more time and spoil you with love one more time. It also felt like I had lost my mother a second time.

Vai, as I fondly called you, you were a godly woman, so peaceful that you would never complain about one child to another. No matter how badly you had been treated, you made sure to bring peace among us before leaving. Your favorite scripture was "Were he oma merie he ojoo" (Romans 12:21). You always held the opinion that one should not repay evil with evil but with good. I'm going to be a good mother-in-law someday 😁, because I've learned from the very best—Comfort Nnaji and Violet Orji—a role I will cherish and uphold.
These 18 years journeying with you as a daughter-in-law have been awesome. I have absolutely no regrets.

I have no doubt you have gone to be with the Lord.

Fare thee well, Violet Orji. Elekwizzu. Mama. Vai. Nwanyi obi oma. Nwanyi huru udo na anya. You lived well.

Rest till the resurrection morning.

I will miss you dearly. 🥲

With love,
Enyinneya.
