Inspiring Mathematicians 9: Apollonius of Perga

Apollonius of Perga was a renowned Greek mathematician who lived around 262–190 BCE and is celebrated as one of the greatest geometers of the ancient world.

Born in Perga, in present-day Turkey, he is best known for his groundbreaking work Conics, a treatise that systematically studied the curves formed by intersecting a plane with a cone, namely the ellipse, parabola, and hyperbola.

Apollonius not only gave these curves their names but also developed many of the geometric properties that would later become essential to astronomy, physics, engineering, and calculus.

His work influenced mathematicians for nearly two millennia and provided a mathematical foundation for later scientists such as Johannes Kepler and Isaac Newton.

Through his rigorous approach to geometry, Apollonius earned the title “The Great Geometer” and remains one of history’s most influential mathematicians.
