Spotted hyenas live in one of the most unusual social systems in the animal kingdom.

Unlike lions or wolves, the females completely dominate the clan. They are larger, more aggressive, and even have significantly higher testosterone levels than the males, which gives them their intimidating behavior and muscular build.

Male hyenas spend much of their lives trying to avoid conflict with females. At feeding time, females and their cubs eat first while lower-ranking males wait nervously nearby for leftovers.

A male that acts too bold or disrespectful can quickly get attacked and chased off by multiple females at once.

What makes hyena society so fascinating is that rank is inherited. Female cubs often outrank adult males from birth and grow up learning dominance early.

Despite their reputation as scavengers, spotted hyenas are actually highly intelligent hunters with complex social structures that researchers compare to primate societies.
