THE SALARY INTELLIGENCE MASTERCLASS.
Most international nurses accept the first salary figure on their offer letter. A significant number of them have never been told that figure is negotiable — and that their years of clinical experience could have moved it significantly higher before they signed.
Under the 2026/27 NHS Agenda for Change pay structure, Band 5 salaries start at £32,073 and progress to £39,043 with experience. Band 6 starts at £37,338 and progresses to £44,962.
These are not fixed entry points for every candidate. They are starting positions in a negotiation that most international clinicians do not realise they are entitled to have.
Here is what most people do not know. NHS Agenda for Change allows Trusts to recognise prior clinical experience when determining your starting pay step.
If you have eight years of post-registration nursing experience from your home country — in emergency medicine, theatres, ICU, or a specialist unit — that experience does not automatically reset to zero when you cross the UK border.
Pay progression under Agenda for Change is based on years of experience at each band. Trusts can and do recognise equivalent overseas experience when making initial salary offers — but only to candidates who know to ask and can evidence the equivalence.
The nurses and AHPs I work with do not accept the first offer without understanding what it reflects. We review the offer, assess whether their international experience has been appropriately recognised, and where it has not, we build the evidence case for a higher starting point before the contract is signed.
Your experience has value. Make sure the offer reflects it.
