President Bola Tinubu has reinforced Nigeria’s maritime security agenda with the commissioning of three naval vessels—NNS Oloibiri, NNS Mambila and NNS Gurara—and the inauguration of a Combined Maritime Task Force for the Gulf of Guinea. Speaking at the Nigerian Navy’s 70th anniversary celebrations in Lagos, Tinubu described the Navy as a critical pillar of national and regional security, highlighting its role in eliminating piracy in Nigerian waters, reducing crude oil theft and supporting economic growth. He said the new vessels reflect ongoing efforts to modernise naval capabilities through recapitalisation and indigenous shipbuilding. The President also hailed the new regional task force as a significant step towards tackling piracy, illegal fishing and other transnational maritime crimes through stronger cooperation among Gulf of Guinea nations.
