One of the many delicious things the Netherlands has given to the world is the stroopwafel. This traditional Dutch treat consists of two thin waffle layers sandwiched together with a rich caramel syrup filling. It was first created in the southern Dutch city of Gouda, the same place famous for Gouda cheese!!
Stroopwafels are one of my favorite things to snack on but they're not easily available outside of Europe :( They have a wonderfully crisp texture, while the caramel filling adds a soft, chewy sweetness. In the Netherlands, many people enjoy placing a stroopwafel on top of a hot cup of tea or coffee for a minute or two before eating it. The warmth softens the waffle slightly and turns the caramel filling warm and gooey, making it even more delicious. π€€π€€
As my sweat shirt says- Do you want a stroopwafel?
